Why This Forum Matters: Let’s Talk About Fibroids
Uterine fibroids represent a critical yet frequently misunderstood women’s health issue. These non-cancerous growths develop within or on the walls of the uterus, impacting up to 70% to 80% of women by the time they reach age 50. While some women remain entirely asymptomatic, many others face painful, life-disrupting symptoms. These can range from debilitating pelvic pain, severe abdominal bloating, and frequent urination to prolonged, heavy menstrual cycles that can trigger fatigue or chronic anemia.
The impact is heavily stratified by race and background. Statistical trends show that Black and Hispanic women are disproportionately affected by fibroids. They are significantly more likely to develop these growths at a younger age, navigate far greater symptom severity, and run a higher risk of facing economic and medical barriers to quality, comprehensive healthcare.
In honor of Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month, this free community forum is designed to break the silence and replace isolation with actionable knowledge. Rather than navigating a complex medical landscape alone, attendees will have a unique opportunity to interface directly with leading local medical specialists. This year’s expert panel includes Dr. John Fischer of the Fibroid Institute in the Houston area, who will be sharing specialized medical insights alongside other trusted healthcare providers and women speaking on their personal fibroid journeys.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, exploring management pathways, or seeking to advocate for a loved one, this gathering is here to equip you with expert resources and community support. Join us at the Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis to prioritize your health, address regional disparities, and take a confident step toward long-term wellness.
