Q & A With Cathryn Shaw, MD of Fibroid Institute Texas

Q: Why did you decide to become a Dallas fibroid doctor? What personal and/or professional path brought you here?

A: I grew up in a very healthcare-centered household. My dad, who is a dentist, encouraged my brother and me to go to medical school. When I got into college, I got a mathematics degree, and I thought I wanted to be a math professor. I taught one year of high school and realized that probably wasn’t the best choice for me. That is when I made the decision to go to medical school and pursue a career in medicine. My brother, who is five years older than me, is also a physician.

Q: What are you most passionate about in your specific medical focus?

A: I finished my fellowship in 2011, and initially in my career, my area of expertise was post-transplant intervention. I did everything, including uterine fibroids. Over the last several years, women’s health and, specifically, minimally invasive treatment options for uterine fibroids have become my primary focus in my career.

Q: What are you most proud of regarding Fibroid Institute’s success, accomplishments, and impact on fibroid patients?

A: I’m most proud of being able to offer very high-end, specialized interventional radiology to our patients. Our entire group of doctors are highly trained and very skilled. We offer top-notch quality care, and all the physicians involved in our practice are as qualified as you can get anywhere in the country.

Q: As a Dallas fibroid doctor, what are some of the biggest challenges you and your team face regarding fibroid treatment and fibroid patients?

A: I think the biggest challenge is educating patients, so they know what their treatment options are. Not all women with uterine fibroids are presented with all the treatment options when they are diagnosed with fibroids. Luckily, with the Internet and Google, patients are becoming more educated and informed individually. Our biggest obstacle is educating the public about all the treatment options available to patients for uterine fibroids. Uterine Fibroid Embolization is not a new treatment option. It has been well-documented and studied since the 1990s as a standard of care for minimally invasive treatment for uterine fibroids. It’s been around for a long time and has a lot of data to back it up.

Q: How about the patients who don’t know they have fibroids? Is that a challenge, too?

A: There’s a small subset of patients who had symptoms for so long and haven’t sought medical care, so those women wouldn’t know they have them. But I do think most people in today’s age get diagnosed because all gynecologists have transvaginal or pelvic ultrasounds. So, if you come and present to a gynecologist and you have these symptoms of pelvic pain, heavy periods, and other symptoms, they’re getting a pelvic ultrasound in the office, and that’s where they learn they have uterine fibroids. If you have symptoms that interrupt your daily activities, you definitely want to talk to your primary care doctor or gynecologist about it.

Q: How do you develop relationships with your patients to communicate that you’re on their side? What kind of words of wisdom do you share with them?

A: I grew up in Mississippi and have never met a stranger. I don’t have much trouble connecting with people and talking with people. The most important thing for patients to have faith and confidence in their physician is knowing the physician is on their side and that all the decisions will be made together as a team. I always give my patients every treatment option available and want them to make an informed decision. This decision shouldn’t just be made by the physician. This is a team effort; we want to do what’s best for the patient in that specific clinical setting. If I don’t think UFE is the best option for them, my partners and I are willing to refer them to someone who can help.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote, philosophy, or mantra?

A: Ever since I started medicine and started practicing, my number one philosophy is to treat patients exactly as I would want myself or my family members treated. As a physician, you’re not going to make a wrong decision if you are treating them like you’d want yourself or your family treated.

Q: What are you most passionate about personally?

A: I will be married for 24 years this summer. My husband and I married quite young; we are high school sweethearts. We have boy-girl twins who will be 16 in May, so I’m passionate about my family. We love to travel and play games. I love to cook; to me, it’s very enjoyable. And I do a lot of Pilates.

Q: Is there anything else you want to share about yourself, the practice, the treatments, or anything else to help patients connect with you?

A: I’ve been practicing interventional radiology since 2011. I’ve always done fibroid embolization on top of the other procedures I offered. I think the main difference with this practice is the concentration on this one disease process. Everyone in our office is educated and informed about the Uterine Fibroid Embolization procedure. We are doing everything in our power to stay up to date with treatment options. We offer more of a concierge experience in that every patient gets their doctor’s cell phone number, and we encourage them to reach out to us or text us if they have any questions. And the level of pain control we have here is a game-changer in post-operative pain management.
