Quick Recovery with UFE

Uterine Fibroid Embolization Offers Quick Recovery

After having Uterine Fibroid Embolization, you will require pain medication and lots of rest. However, you can expect to feel better as each day progresses. Complete recovery time is generally 7 to 10 days.

The First Five Days

For the first 5 days following the Uterine Fibroid Embolization your body will need time to heal. During this time most women have moderate to severe cramps, nausea and low-grade fever. Additionally, vaginal spotting or discharge may occur for several weeks. These are all normal side effects in response to the UFE treatment. Dr. Slonim will give you several medications to help manage these symptoms and make you as comfortable as possible. Your first menstrual cycle after UFE may be heavier than normal, but then it will get much lighter. Your other menstrual symptoms will also improve over time.

Limit Your Activities

Try to get some easy walking time in each day. Start each day out walking a little more than you did the day before, then gradually increase each day. Walking increases blood flow throughout your body and helps to prevent the development of blood clots and constipation. You may start cardio exercise as soon as you feel up to it.

Avoid Heavy Lifting

For the first two weeks following UFE, avoid lifting anything or doing activities that would cause you to strain. Do not lift more than 20 pounds. Allow others to help you with these activities, which may include lifting a child, a pet, grocery bags, laundry, a briefcase, a backpack, sweeping, running a vacuum cleaner, etc.

Avoid Baths And Swimming

As tempting and inviting as it may seem do not attempt to take a bath or soak in a tub or go swimming for the first few days following UFE until your doctor tells you it is okay. However, you can take a shower. Also, immediately following UFE you may notice some vaginal bleeding. Wear sanitary pads if bleeding occurs. Do not use tampons.

Return To Work

Most patients typically take 1 week off from work when undergoing UFE. However, it all depends on the type of work you do and how your recovery is progressing. For women whose work requires heavy lifting, Dr. Slonim usually recommends 2 weeks off.

Always check with your doctor before having sexual intercourse. To avoid pain and infection, do not have sexual intercourse for 2 weeks after the UFE procedure. After 2 weeks, you may resume having intercourse if it is not uncomfortable for you. If you have discomfort, wait until your body has had more time to heal.

For the first day or two following UFE your stomach will be very sensitive. Drink plenty of fluids, but only eat if you feel hungry. Be gentle on your stomach, with foods that are easy to digest.

Bowel Movements

You may notice that your bowel movements are not regular for several days after your UFE treatment. This is common. Take the stool softener that is prescribed. If you become uncomfortable because you have not had a bowel movement after a couple of days, ask your doctor about taking a mild laxative.

Follow Medication Instructions

Some medications, such as blood thinners, are best discontinued several days prior to the UFE procedure. Your doctor may advise you to discontinue use of these medications for a short period after UFE as well. If you have diabetes, you will also be instructed about modification to your diabetes medication schedule.

Pain Medications

Dr. Slonim will give you prescriptions for pain medications. Follow the written instructions and schedule you will receive. Check with your doctor before you consider taking any additional over-the-counter medication. Pain medications make some patients sick to their stomach. If you feel sick, try taking your medicine with food. If your pain is not under control after the procedure, call our office so we can adjust your medications..
